Creating a New User Flow

Client: Driveway

Background: Driveway.com is a web-based solution for car buying and selling. The entire transaction is done online with no need to go to a dealership.

Challenge: Create functionality for a user to save their search parameters, allowing them to return to their search at a later time, see new inventory, and get notifications when there are new matches.

Solution: Two-pronged: Integrating the ability to save a search on the product wall/search results page; Creating a “Saved Searches” detail page within the user account space. Also needed were ability to rename saved searches and delete them.

Roles: I was involved in this project from its inception and was able to contribute opinions on the UI throughout.

There was a lot of exploration around how to indicate that a search was able to be saved: A bookmark flag icon was the first approach. I asked questions about available functionality and learned that, while a user could save a search from the results page, the only way to delete it would be to go to the Saved Searches page in the account center. For this reason, I advised against using a bookmark icon, because those are usually perceived as “on/off” toggles. I recommended plain text (“Save Search”).

I also drilled down into the functionality around editing a saved search and found that at the time, the user would only be able to rename the search. They would be unable to change the search parameters from the Saved Search screen. Based on that, I recommended “Rename Search” rather than a pencil/”edit” icon.

Other elements written for include toast messages, promo cards, CTAs.
